The AussieHost.com renewable power supply!
Here’s the AussieHost.com renewable power supply, consisting of 4 x 80w solar panels, a 520AH battery bank, a 1Kw pure sine inverter, and a 300w wind turbine. This supplies all the power needed for the AussieHost.com office. The AussieHost.com servers are not located in the AussieHost.com office. The servers are located in the GlobalSwitch datacentre in Sydney.

This comment is completely unrelated to this post, but I just thought I’d point out that for some reason Firefox + StopBadware.org really, really doesn’t like this site.
That is an excellent set up, more people need to take advantage of renewable energy!
Sounds good John.
Yep, there’s nothing like having your own endless supply of renewable energy. It just makes good sense to harvest the free energy that is around us.
Bob, that’s a really great setup you have. Around 6-7 years ago we considered putting solar panels on our house, but didn’t. I think we would be close to break-even by now if we had done so. Sooner or later I’m definitely going to be setting up with solar, wind and whatever else is avail. I like the idea of self sufficiency and the environmental benefits are also a plus.
Gavin,
I’m interested in what you’ve designed there, for the turbine. If you could send those details to bob@enviergy.com that would be great.
Nice setup.
I have designed a simple control box for these turbines that includes the recommended 100a circuit breaker and a switch to apply the electromagnetic turbine brake. The brake is very useful for erecting the turbine and taking it down and is also important to avoid high voltage spikes that can be caused by back EMF if you just disconnect the turbine from the battery bank.
Let me know if you are interested in the details.

solar panels and wind turbine are definitely good ! if you can use both it is even better!
Yep, solar and wind is taking full advantage of what nature provides. Makes sense to use both if you can.
$550.00 well spent. I agree with you, when you can have both energy and solar, you shouldn’t hesitate.
They’re both renewables and both come from the largest fusion reactor in our Solar System, the sun, so both are good in my books. Some places wind is better and in other places solar is better. I like solar over wind, as solar has no moving parts and we get more sun than wind here. But why pick one when you can have both?
I was wondering which is better?wind energy or solar?
Hi Gavin
Got the wind turbine from ebay, from Todae -

Cost me $550.00
It’s come in real handy, as today there’s not much sun, but lots of wind, as it’s overcast, windy and very cloudy. So the turbine is doing most of the work today.
Hi Aussie Bob,
Great set up. How much did the wind turbine cost? Where did you get it?
